Communications 1010: Elements of Effective Communication

Reflections

I’ve learned more about the importance of communicating with others on a daily basis – which is important to me as a mother.  I am currently in pursuit of a degree in Sociology and plan to eventually teach in higher education.  The importance of understanding nonverbal communication (smiling vs. not smiling, shaking a person’s hand vs. not shaking their hand, making eye contact vs. looking away from someone) is powerful and something I learned in my communications class that I know will come in handy when I become a teacher. It can be the difference between being able to connect with a student or not and it’s pretty important for teachers to have a good connection with their students.

Favorite Assignment
One of my favorite assignments was when we were assigned to work in groups. Although there were five people in our group there were only two active members including myself.  It was a stressful situation at times but I enjoyed working with the other student in my group. We were able to divide all the responsibilities between us and complete our individual tasks. It gave me a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction to know that we completed all our tasks in the allotted timeframe that was given to us.
